Auto Repair Fulton, NY

Your battery provides the power to start your car, but your alternator is responsible for providing all of your car’s electrical power. It generates power through the movement of the crankshaft and continues to produce power while your engine is running. If your alternator starts to fail, you’ll need an alternator repair. As your Chrysler dealer, we have the skills and parts to fix it for you.

Dim Headlights

Your headlights are one of the components most sensitive to changes in the electrical supply. The bulbs in the headlights need a constant and consistent supply of power to function. As your alternator gets older, it becomes more difficult for it to generate the level of power it once did. The weaker an alternator gets, the less power it will produce.

Your computer will need to apportion power to the various components when your alternator can’t produce enough power to supply all of your car’s electrical needs. This means supplying just enough power to activate a component, and providing more power when it’s available. Dim headlights can be a sign that your alternator is only able to supply enough power to switch on the lights. We will need to check your alternator for signs of trouble.

Accessory Problems

The reduced power supply from a worn alternator will also manifest problems in the electrical system. A lack of constant power will cause random anomalies, for example, a charging port that fails to charge your phone and then suddenly works. Random electrical problems can occur for several reasons, including worn wiring or a damaged component. Too many random problems point to a larger cause of the trouble.

These random electrical problems will be minor at first, but they will become commonplace as your alternator fails. Our technicians can test your alternator, and we’ll install a new one if it’s falling. Once a bad alternator is replaced, these random problems will disappear.

Stalling Problems

One of the most dangerous problems associated with a worn alternator is your car suddenly stalling. We’ve seen that your car’s computer will supply power to the various components as needed, but certain components are essential. The spark plugs are one of the most important electrical devices in your car, as they enable combustion to take place. Without combustion, your car won’t move.

The spark plugs and several other vital systems must always be supplied with power. If the alternator is producing such little power that it can’t supply even priority systems, the alternator needs to be replaced. Our technicians will test the alternator and your electrical system, as it’s also possible that there may be another fault that’s causing the problem.

A failing alternator grows progressively weaker and will show numerous signs that it’s in trouble. If you experience any strange behavior with your electrical system, call our service department right away at Longley Bros Inc. We can fix your alternator and any other electrical problem for you.
